About Me

I'm Marie, an avid reader and doctor from Manchester, UK.

I decided to start this blog after moving in with my boyfriend and having it dawn on me just how daunting my to-be-read pile actually was. Books in the living room, books in the spare bedroom, books in the airing cupboard - not to mention the boxes of books still stuck in my parents' garage with no home to go to. I wanted a way to track my reading and exchange views with other bookworms. There's nothing like a quick browse around the book blogging community to make you feel better about the relatively modest size of your own to-be-read list!

I like reading:
  • crime fiction (I'm a particular sucker for Scandinavian authors)
  • anything a bit Victorian/gothic
  • dystopian classics
  • quirky characters
  • pop science books
In general I'm not so much a fan of romance novels, historical sagas or 'high' fantasy (you know, the wizards and warlocks kind), but I will give most things a go if the premise is good or if it has been recommended to me by someone whose opinion I trust.

You can also find me on Goodreads, Twitter and Read It Swap It.

You can e-mail me at girlvsbookshelf at gmail dot com.

  1. Hey, your house sounds a little bit like mine! Not sure if this is a good thing or not but it's always nice to know I'm not the only maniac. Maniacs love company after all. I actually sneak books into the house and hide them, like some sort of shopping addict. A few of my stacks are becoming a little dangerous however - and I do have my dogs to think of, they don't realise the danger as they scamper round the house. I expect to come home one day to a big pile of books with a tail.
